Nothing is so pleasing like arriving on the banks of the Maumee River before the sun sets, getting to your fishing spot and claiming your length of the fishbowl. Maumee River offers the world one of the greatest walleye fishing spot and experience. Each year during March and April thousands of anglers stream into Maumee from all corners of the world to fish in this river. Just like in the large Toledo area there are plenty of fishing opportunities abound on river year-round. From bluegills to white bass, perch to walleye you will have something on the line to take at the end of your fishing exercise.
Maumee River which can be accessed on various routes in and around Toledo is a unique fishing destination. During different seasons you can find different fishes here, for instance during spring you can catch plenty of Walleye as they flock the river to spawn. Shortly after this the white bass also takes their turn. Maumee River is also known for plenty of channel catfish, rare flathead catfish, and smallmouth bass fishes. One spectacular thing with this fishing destination is that the fish are here all year round.
However, even with the fact that there are plenty of fish more so in the annual spawning periods which occur between mid-March and late April, there are few things you need to consider before setting out for Toledo. If you are only interested in catching a trophy-sized fish worthy of your time and energy spent, you will need to investigate things like the water level, water temperature, and flow of water currents. All affect the behavior of fish and subsequently affects the number of fish on the river.
Selecting your fishing location is also very important this of course, is dependent on the type of fish you will want to fish for and the season of the year. For instance, during the spawning periods, a high concentration of walleyes can be located on the sand or in weeded shores which are ideal for spawning. Most common fishing hot spots along the river can be spotted along Tall Timber Rapids and can be traced north to Ewing Island.
After you have found the right place for your fishing it’s time to get the right bait. Most anglers here use the lead headed jig bait; they are available in many colors and you can choose any based on your test and preferences. Wading on the water can be a bit cool and uncomfortable so make sure you wear the right pair of neoprene waders they will make a difference regarding your fishing experience.
